Though I had been planning on continuing my talk on Sexting today, i totally forgot that it was Memorial Day. Instead I want to take a quick break from writing/politics and talk about our soldiers. On Wednesday I will resume my normal schedule.
In the last year hundred of our men and women died serving their country. Agree with the war or not, these people sacrificed their life so that we could live in freedom. Not only do these people sacrifice, but their children, wifes, and families lose their loved ones. They do this for you.
As millions of towns and cities across our country have parades today I recommend that you go see one. Stand up, honor our flag, and honor those who have served. Be they wounded, dead, or merely a vet, they deserve your support. If you see a vet, thank them. If you know a vet, call them up. No matter what, you should honor our soldiers today.

Joint Chiefs chairman calls fiscal calamity a bigger threat than any war
"The scope of it is, to me, mind-boggling," said Mullen in an interview with Military Update Wednesday
The amount nearly matched last year's defense budget, Mullen noted, contrasting the speed of that action to the long, detailed process of setting military requirements, debating programs and passing a defense budget.
That's "not even to speak of discussions, literally today, of a stimulus package that's going to be another 800 or 900 billion (dollars). I think that's going to affect all of us much more than personally," Mullen said.
"I've been concerned and remain concerned about the impact of this on security," he continued. "It's a global crisis. And as that impacts security issues, or feeds greater instability, I think it will impact on our national security in ways that we quite haven't figured out yet"
The only reason the scope of this crisis should be mind-boggling to anyone is if they don't understand the problem. The scope is so great because it reaches so far back to fundamental ideological assumptions that were made that turned out to be completely false. The problem isn't that we aren't spending enough money. We have been spending and creating money in record amounts, exponentially. The problem is with money itself and our system of production, consumption, and distribution as a whole.

Dear Statehouse Protestors:
On Friday a group marched around the Statehouse in downtown Columbus several times as part of the ‘End the Occupation’(http://www.endtheoccupation.org/article.php?id=1773) group. They were protesting the bombings of Gaza by Israel(http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/M/ML_ISRAEL_PALESTINIANS?SITE=OHCOL&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT). Basically, they were walking around the building, waving flags, chanting, and being escorted by some of Columbus’ finest mounted officers. Trust me, the horses were the most entertaining part.
So, anyways, there is a group of disgruntled Muslims marching around our statehouse simply to protest the actions that another country is committing against their people. Does that make any sense to you? I mean, why would Columbus, or Toledo, or Cinci, or even Akron (they have protested at all) have to do with Israel bombing the West Bank? Sure, it is all nice to have a obvious statement against something, but when we can not do anything, I see it as more of a waste of time. What can Columbus do to help the Palestinians out?
I mean, when was the last time that you saw people marching around our statehouse wanting the US to get involved in Darfur? Nope, they are all doing it online, where there is a larger impact, and where you can get more people. Marching in locations which have no say in the matter is useless. Go march in Washington (where the US does have some policy say on Israel). Or go march around the Israeli Embassy (where it will be heard). Go march somewhere where it actually matters, and where you are not wasting our state’s resources. Better yet, go march in Israel as a protest.
Actually, on a side note, don’t march in Israel; odds are that they will kill you and your family.

On People Who Want Out Of Iraq

I am sorry about not having an entry up on Friday, I know that I copped out, but I really was doing a lot of other work

In 2001 the World Trade Center was hit by two airplanes and collapsed in the event that will forever be known as 9/11. About a year later President Bush decided to invade the country of Iraq claiming that it had something directly to do with 9/11. We now know that was false, and so many Americans have taken up the chant that we should get out of Iraq immediately. While I was at first for this position, and I never supported the invasion to start, I have reformed my position to one in which I think that we should stay in Iraq. While I have only one mail reason for staying in Iraq, I have two secondary reasons that are more defenses against persons who wish to leave - We need to clean up our spilled milk - The Soldiers signed up for this - The past is the past. People who want to leave Iraq - What Really Grinds My Gigantic Notched Wheels.
We need to clean up our spilled milk:
Really, I have only one reason for supporting the staying in Iraq. That is, We need to clean up our spilled milk. While we should never have gone into Iraq in the first place, we are now in there, and now need to fix what we have done. We have torn down (literally) the infrastructure of Iraq and made it extremely unlivable. We have allowed rouge gangs to roam the country, killing those who disagree with them on the slightest things. Frankly, we have taken Iraq from the Hell-hole that it was into a worse Hell-hole, don't ask me how we did that. Frankly, I think it is time that we stop making a mountain out of a mole-hill and stop crying over the milk. Let's clean up, get it back to at least how it was when we went in, and then get the hell out.
The Soldiers Signed Up For This
When arguing about the Iraq war people often bring up the fact that so many soldiers have died in Iraq. Yes, in March of this year we did indeed pass 4,000 deaths in Iraq. However, that is a far toss from any other war, where we lost tens of thousands, if not hundreds. 4,000 mothers, fathers, wife, brothers, and children lost their families, 4,000 people lost a main income source. Yet, didn't these soldiers know the risks when they signed up? Didn't they know what they were getting themselves into? That is my position; they knew what they were getting into, so, while sad, this is not really our concern.
The Past is the Past:
This has always been a pet peeve of mine, the people who claim that because something was in the past means it should not be now. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has long argued that because cows were originally not like they are now (not dominated by humans, not producing as much milk, etc.) they should not be like that now (I do reserve the right to use this same argument when I complain about PETA). The problem with this argument is that if we release all cows now, they would die of starvation and need of us (they now do need us). Remember, the past is the past, not the present. With Iraq there is a large argument that we should not stay because we should never have been there to start with. That argument is, of course, very fallacious. Yes, we should not have been there, BUT WE ARE. Stop worrying about what happened in the past and worry about what is now.
